A Muir Moment

I’m trying to embody some positivity these days. Yesterday was my annual audiogram, and my hearing is getting a lot worse fast. I’m now off the charts at high frequencies (meaning I don’t hear them at all). My audiologist cranked up my hearing aids as high as they go, and now I’m overwhelmed with a cacophony of sound, none of which makes any sense to me. I hear bangs and footsteps and rustling papers and sliding chairs, but cannot make out the voices clearly at all. It all makes teaching a 3rd grade class quite interesting and overwhelming. I have to re-teach my brain how to process sound, and so far I’m finding that to be quite a daunting task as a 27-year-old. I’m trying to focus on all of the blessings in my life instead of thinking about the fact that it’s quite likely that I’ll be completely deaf one day soon.
This quote my Muir also makes me think of a line from one of my favorite Flaming Lips songs, “Do You Realize?” (which was also Garrett and my “first dance” song at our wedding):
Do you realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round…
Embrace the positive. Live your life to its fullest. Appreciate the little things. These are my focus to get me through the week.
