In the Depths of Winter, an Invincible Summer…

This is another Sierra Club Daily Ray of Hope Gem, which I had to share. A couple of weeks ago, my husband Garrett and I went on a wintry hike with our friend Sara. As we crunched along the snow and ice-encrusted paths through the Great Swamp wilderness, we enjoyed the cold, fresh air and natural environment around us. Along the way, I stopped to take photos of every little thing like I always do, with Garrett and Sara patiently waiting.
At the end of the hike, we went home and made a warm and delicious vegetarian dinner (for Sara and me since Gare was still on the Master Cleanse) and looked through our photos. Among the photos was the one posted above, the little persevering and resiliant plant in its warmth-carved cubby in the icy snow (click the photo to see a larger size). Garrett commented on how amazed he was at how it turned out. He shared that during the hike when I had crouched down to take a bunch of pictures of the little plant, he had thought it was so silly that I was taking pictures of it, since it was just a little plant in the snow. He was right, though… it didn’t seem like anything impressive from the viewpoint of a person standing or walking along the path. But once you crouched down and got a really close and detailed look…. you could see the glimpse, loud and clear, of the invicible summer that exists even during the coldest winters.
