The Gift of a Sense of Wonder

By Kitty | December 15, 2009

I recently was sent a link to a blog post that a good friend, Whitney Wiest, found very fitting because of who is expected this week (my daughter!!).  Called “Living at Silver Creek Preserve“, the post is written by a woman who led Whitney in an Asian adventure trip back in 2001, and it embodies the feelings I have about bringing my daughter into the world. Only 3 days away from my due date, I feel like I am fully ready to welcome my daughter into the world, and I am eagerly anticipating the wonder about which Dayna speaks in her post:

Now that I have a son, the wonders of living in this amazing place are all new to me again. It is an exciting journey and I look forward to his first fish caught, the first mud he roles in, the first feather found… all the wonders that make up my days at Silver Creek.

Mine will be a daughter, and although I’m not living in a Nature Preserve, I can’t wait to introduce my darling to the abundantly ubiquitous (intentional redundancy) wonders of the world around us. I, too, can’t wait until the first mud she rolls in, the first feather she finds, the first leaf she fondles in awe… it’s going to be great!

I particularly love, and will end this post with, the quote from Rachel Carson’s A Sense of Wonder:

“A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear- eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood. If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years, the sterile preoccupation with things that are artificial, the alienation from the sources of our strength.”

Heres a picture of Whitney during one of our work adventures from our environmental consulting, wetland delineation days... it embodies the sense of amazement and wonder of all that is nature... filled with euphoria, completely surrounded by the amazing green plant life!

Once again…a beautifully written post, a gorgeous picture and I agree, wholeheartedly, with both of the quotes used.
xoxo, can’t wait to see pictures!

It truly is fabulous to watch your child discover things for the first time, it makes you stop and take time to see how fascinating things can be as well. Things like ants, leaves, clouds even the wind will fascinate them and you will rediscover how awesome the world is.
